Brighton Media Centre (BMC) is the umbrella organisation which really has initiated practical support and development for the design/creative industries in Brighton. Since 1992 BMC has facilitated the growth of the local cluster by offering serviced office accommodation, good facilities, networking events, exhibitions, electronic networks, business support and information services aimed specifically at the sector.
The newly formed City of Brighton & Hove is now a UK location of pure excellence for all forms of media practice, and BMC is renowned nationally and now also internationally for its good experience in cluster development and management competence. BMC aims to continue its big expansion in Brighton with further development of the model and promotion of the sector.
A large derelict site nearby in Middle Street becomes a building site –apart from some disturbance, it is all a plus for the regeneration of this part of Brighton. Middle Street is in “The Place To Be!” - right at the heart of the City.
Several suites in Old Steyne House are upgraded, to overcome the problems and enhance the delights of this older (1830’s) Grade 2 Listed building.
Money is raised during the year for the South East Asia Earthquake Fund, thanks to generous clients and to Art Exhibitions focussed on the Tsunami story.
Lighthouse sell the freehold of 9-12 Middle Street, and BMC move out of the last spaces they held there as it is no longer viable to run public services there without public funding.
The lift at Old Steyne House is refurbished, probably for the first time since 1946, and now works smoothly and in line as far as possible with DDA requirements.
Another excellent BMC Xmas Party at Sumo, with great live sounds from The Cadillacs, and over 200 guests. More substantial sums were raised for the SE Asia Earthquake Appeal from a Prize Raffle.
