BMC SPONSORS FESTIVAL THAT BRINGS FAITHS TOGETHER IN HARMONY

BMC has become one of the sponsors of the exciting new Brighton Festival of World Sacred Music, which sets out to promote understanding and tolerance between people of different faiths.

'All the major faith traditions use the most amazing music to express spiritual yearning and ecstasy. This festival is a chance to experience everything from Gospel to Indian raags, and Sufi song to Hassidic dance music,' says Kate Whyman, the festival director, who is based at BMC's Old Steyne site.

The festival, which takes place 19-23 October, is inspired by the hugely successful Fez Festival of World Sacred Music in Morocco and has a great line-up of musicians including:

Dhafer Youssef - outstanding Tunisian-born singer and oud player from the Sufi tradition
The Burning Bush - mystical and celebratory music from the Jewish tradition
Soname - haunting mountain songs from Tibet
Black Voices - all-female a cappella Gospel group
Baluji Shrivastav - sitar master
- plus a host of local musicians from different faith traditions.
The festival has the backing of Peter Gabriel and a number of local political and religious dignitaries including Cllr Tehmtan Framroze and Imam Dr Abduljalil Sajid. It also has funding from Arts Council England, Southeast.

Tickets are available from the Dome Box Office, New Road, Brighton BN1 1UE, Tel: 01273 709709. For further details see www.worldsacredmusic.org.uk

BMC Exhibitions @ Friese Greene Gallery

Halloween - Prepared to be spooked!

For one weekend only Halloween comes to the Brighton Media Centre in the form of a ghost train theme maze, ghouls, ghosts and other things that go bump in the night!

Halloween Taking place the weekend before Halloween on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th this prelude to the event guarantees you will be quaking in your boots - not for the faint hearted.
The gallery space will be partitioned with black fabric, routed like a maze. Guests will enter a dark thin (mock) corridor that has cackling/wind sound effects and leads to a crossroads where a ghoul will stand holding a wooden sign post. Each route will lead to an installation or performance with a few jumpy moments along the way. The show will take five to ten minutes.

If you would like to find out more about exhibiting in our Gallery, please contact Helene Taylor on 01273 201371, or gallery@mediacentre.org.

Creating Confident Kids!

Taster sessions run on the first Saturday of every month at Westerfield Day Nursery, Richmond Road, Worthing.

milentos Jane and Suzzanne, both former primary school teachers, were walking and talking on the Downs one day. Their conversation turned to confident children, and the fact that with added confidence children do better at school.
And from that simple beginning "Milentos" was born.
They devised courses involving a series of physical games, dances, exercises and relaxation techniques. All these activities have been designed for parent and child to do together, leaving both with a renewed sense of co-ordination, self-confidence and energy.

Parents who have taken part in the Taster sessions say there are many advantages for adults as well as children:-"It breaks down barriers. We used to play with our children but now we don't because there are so many other things to take our attention like TV and computer games, and they all tend to push families apart. Now we are going back to basics and it's great!" These courses are made to suit different age ranges as well as a range of issues like shyness, nervousness and special educational needs, however they are designed for absolutely any child who would like a boost in any way. At the end of each session everyone learns relaxtion techniques and ideas to develop positive thinking.

Global Warming Warning!

As the planet warms up, it is making the weather more extreme. The following article underlines how this can have an impact on us here, personally and in our business life. BMC will be looking into what precautions can be taken to prevent loss of heating in the Media Centre buildings in the event of a cut in the supply of gas. Although it would not be as serious as an electric power cut (over which we also have no control), it would still make things difficult if the weather this winter becomes as harsh as predicted. We suggest that BMC companies would be sensible to draw up contingency plans in the event of their staff being unable to work in the buildings due to lack of heating. This would include bringing electric heaters in should such a turn of events look likely, and organising things so that staff could work temporarily from home if there really was no supply of gas for heating here. Naturally, we are taking the optimistic and positive view that there won't be a problem, but as they say in the Boy Scouts - "Be Prepared!"

Businesses could face power cuts this winter

Business groups have reacted angrily to the news that businesses could suffer power cuts if the UK experiences a harsh winter this year. As new data from the Meteorological Office warned that Britain is likely to experience its coldest winter in a decade, energy minister Malcolm Wicks confirmed that businesses could experience problems with gas supplies in the event of a particularly cold spell of weather. Digby Jones, Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), said that business owners are extremely worried about the problem. 'We're the fourth largest economy on earth and it's an absolute disgrace that we risk running out of fuel because of something that was entirely avoidable', he said. The CBI chief warned that the UK has just 11 days worth of gas supplies held in reserve, compared with 55 days in other European countries. The business group is urging ministers to address the 'disadvantages' being faced by British manufacturers, and to commission the development of nuclear power stations.
