"REMINDER" - PROMOTION OF YOUR COMPANY!

'An example of how it would look in each BMC building'

companylogos

As part of our plans to re-vamp the reception areas in each building and promote the companies that take office space with us more, we are proposing to display a framed logo and brief information about each company including your website address, on the walls in the Entrance/Reception Areas of each BMC building, and would like to include your company.

What we have in mind is producing a large image of each company's logo with a few bullet points underneath, outlining to visitors and other companies in the building alike, in a nutshell, what each company does.

If you would like to customise your company details:

1) We would be grateful if you could email a copy of your company logo [as high a resolution image as possible] to Dan Cummings at dan@mediacentre.org and
2) Give us 3 bullet points about your company that you would like to have listed e.g.
- Web Design Agency
- Corporate Identity Development
- T.V Production

We will also be re-launching our website.

Please have a look at the information about your company that we have taken from your existing listing on the current BMC web site:
www.mediacentre.org/clients/clientlist.php

It is worth bearing in mind that there are a lot of visitors to the BMC website, and a good proportion of those are looking for companies to carry out work for them - this could be a valuable "shop window" for your organisation.

1) If you are happy with your existing text and details being displayed on the new website, please let us know.
2) If you would like to review and change your text, please email: dan@mediacentre.org. and send him a revised copy so he can update your web listing with this.

If you would like your company's details customised on the website and on the new wall display, please could you let Dan have your company information as soon as possible.

Should you have any queries relating to this, please do not hesitate to contact your Site Manager - Helen Katsouris for 68 & 15-17 Middle Street sites or Christine Stevenson for the Old Steine site.

Many Thanks

BMC BROADBAND CHANGES

As of the 1st of July we have changed the way that we deliver broadband to you with an expanded range of services aimed at providing much greater flexibility and value for money

We are finding that more and more people are quite happy to work on a "home" broadband service and because of this we are introducing our "Basic" range of broadband connections. These are equivalent to home ADSL connections (but without the need for a modem)

Alongside the "Basic" range will also be the "Business" range of services, aimed at companies that have a larger commercial data requirement that is less contended. These are equivalent to SDSL connections.

What do I need to do now? If you are on your current £65/month broadband and are happy with the service, you do not need to do anything as this is the same as Business Option 2.

If you are on any other broadband connection or if you would like to change to any of our above services, please contact your site manager as soon as possible.
If you would like additional information on these or other services, please contact our technical department on 201105 or email: tech@mediacentre.org .

New connections are installed within 8 working hours and are supported by a dedicated on-site technical team. We supply as many fixed, public IP addresses as your company needs, at no extra cost.

TIGHTER DEADLINES FOR COMPANIES

Article Courtesy of 'Business Heads'

Changes to company law are on their way. Together with a package of new measures that could make life a little easier for small companies, the deadline for submission of your year end accounts looks set to move forward by three months.

HM revenue & Customs is also looking at reducing by three months the time allowed for submission of company tax returns (from 12 to nine months). This would bring it in line with the date of payment of any Corporation Tax due.

The legislation required to make these changes is currently on its passage through Parliament and the effective dates are not yet published. Companies House will be writing to all companies affected once the provisions are finalised.Once the dates are known, if a company foresees practical difficulties as the result of the changes, the possibility exists to alter their year end date so that the preparation of their accounts and company tax return takes place at a more convenient or advantageous time of year.

SPINTRONICS - SMALLER, FASTER AND MAGNETIC!

Article Courtesy of 'Leeds University Reporter'

QUICKER, CLEANER COMPUTERS ARE IN SIGHT!

Leeds physicists are leading a new £2.3m project to make new materials which would allow computer memory and other components to use magnetism rather than conventional electrical charges, paving the way for smaller, faster gadgets.

Magnetism in microelectronic components - spintronics - is already used for reading high performance hard disks, like those in iPods. A similar device can also store information magnetically on a memory chip, instead of needing an electric charge. Charges leak away and have to be replenished a thousand times a second, but magnetism doesn't require a power supply. It can also be used to control the flow of electrons in a component so a chip could re-configure itself in the most effective way for each calculation it handled.

Leeds specialises in making magnetic materials and they are now using a 'sputter' machine (pictured) which allows them to fabricate materials in layers with thickness control equivalent to adding or removing a single atom.

Dr Chris Marrows said: "We are in effect spray painting with atoms in the sputter machine. It gives us the control to build materials layer by layer. It's the same process - but much more clean and controlled - which causes thin grey layers of gunk to form at the ends of a fluorescent light bulb."

"The iPod wouldn't have been possible without the high speed drive inside it. In the past, simple coils of wire were used but the individual bits of data are now so tiny that exquisitely sensitive detectors are needed to get the data back."

Unlike the flash memory in digital cameras, spintronic memory can be written to more quickly and won't wear out. Also, it could make computers less power hungry, reducing electricity bills and carbon dioxide emissions.

Dr Marrows added: "Ultimately in the extreme case of operating on the single spin of an electron, spintronics will be an excellent basis for quantum computing."

Imagine a computer instantly working when it was turned on because it didn't need power to reload its memory and get it working.

BUSINESSES 'FAILING TO CLAIM' TAX BREAKS

Article 'courtesy of Business Heads'

Many businesses are failing to claim the tax breaks that are available to them, according to a new study. The research has revealed that many tax reliefs and incentives are going unclaimed either as a result of lack of awareness or because of concern over the amount of red tape involved in applying for the reliefs.

Average awareness of key incentive schemes, including employee share schemes, research and development (R&D) tax credits and first year capital allowances, was found to be just 41%. Meanwhile, only 11% of firms had taken up the reliefs.Small companies are particularly likely to miss out on tax breaks.

Just 30% of businesses with turnover of less than £2m were aware of the reliefs, while only 7% had made use of them. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) warned that many small businesses would be unlikely to approach Government agencies for assistance. Stephen Alambritis of the FSB commented, 'If you leave it to a civil servant to sell something, it just doesn't happen'.

Exhibition Space

FG Basement Gallery

gallery The Friese Greene House Gallery is an industrial-style basement space with flexible lighting options at 15-17 Middle Street. It has attracted innovative shows over the last 12 months from local artists and students as well as exhibitors from further afield. The gallery is listed in many local publications partly due to the successful run of shows during the Brighton Fringe Festival which in turn has increased the profile of the space.

80FT PEACEHAVEN ABSEIL

Saturday 9th September 2006 - Peacehaven Cliffs, Sussex

peacehaven
If you fancy doing something a bit more extreme than the usual computer interaction or tea-making, how about jumping over an 80 foot cliff?

There would be a rope to control your fall (of course?!! - you are still wanted here at BMC), fixed to a safety harness. You would be given a safety briefing first by qualified abseiling instructors. Then off you go to the edge of the cliffs at Peacehaven, to enjoy a fantastic bird's eye view as you gently descend to the beach below.

What's the point of this?

This is a sponsored event, all run in aid of the Anthony Nolan Trust ,who raise cash for research, donors and treatment for people with leukemia.

You would need to pledge to raise at least £75 for the Trust, on top of a small entry fee, but for the chance of a lifetime - to see our super Sussex cliffs from the top outside edge, as well as helping people back from the brink of a potentially fatal disease - what an opportunity!

If you're interested get in touch with: susan.parr@anthonynolan.org or ring 01424-757812 or 01865-875757
