Internet Crime On The Increase

Beware of the scam artists. (This article is taken from the Times Online Money section, January 6th, 2006)

Nobody likes to admit that they have been had. But according to Which?, formerly the Consumers' Association, about 5 million Britons have been fooled into responding to a scam, while a further 23 million have been unsuccessfully targeted.
The scammers' most popular ruse involves using an automated phone call that invites people to claim a prize. The hapless callers who respond are left racking up call charges on a premium-rate number for a prize which never arrives. Even the age-old Nigerian 419 e-mail scam, which invites victims to disclose their bank details to obtain a large sum of money, is still stinging consumers.

Which? helpfully reminds us that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I have noticed that I have been targeted with an increasing number of phishing e-mails, which impersonate banks and attempt to trick victims into revealing their account details.

The latest phishing e-mail, purporting to be from eBay, the internet auction website, states: "It has come to our attention that 95% of all fraudulent auctions are caused by members using stolen credit cards to purchase or sell non existent items. This is why we require our member to add a Debit Card to their billing records as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and reduce the instance of fraud...To verify your details click here." Scheme offers Sussex firms finance where traditional lenders will not.

Article courtesy of Business Heads:

Capital Business Support is a not for profit organisation backed by the local Enterprise Agencies. The loan scheme is a Community Development Finance Initiative (CDFI) and is, aimed at helping micro, small and medium enterprises and social enterprises in order to achieve positive social change and to bring wealth to disadvantaged communities”.

If you are starting a business or looking to grow an existing small business, and you have been refused credit buy a bank or mainstream lender, CDFI could offer you an alternative source.Entrepreneurs interested will have to meet the basic eligibility criteria:

:they must be at least 18 years of age;
·the business will be based in Sussex;
·they will need a business plan that works (but free help with this is available);
·they will need to prove that they have been refused the loan by at least one mainstream lender. Although any profits made are ploughed back into the scheme, interest rates reflect the high risk nature of the lending:
·14.75% for loans £3,000 to £10,000;
·13.25% for loans £10,000 upwards.

In addition, there is an arrangement fee of 2% (with a minimum charge of £80). The majority of loans are not secured. However, this is not always the case.
