FRIESE-GREENE HOUSE RECEPTION
However, BMC now has a staffed Reception Point at the front
of the building, and a lovely large Reception Area where visitors can wait and where clients will be able to meet and greet them.
In addition, there is now a much better sized kitchen to serve the ground floor, and a palatial new w.c., with all the adaptations needed for disabled
users but also resplendent for our clients and visitors. All in all, the improvement in facilities and first impression of the building is very noticeable, especially when compared to the previous layout we have all had to put up with in the past. A great step forward! |

SIMON FROM ARGYLL ENVIRONMENTAL BMC Client Simon will be competing in the Trans Alp Challenge (TAC) this summer. What exactly is the TAC I hear you ask? Well it’s an 8 day stage race, completed mostly off-road on mountain bikes. The event covers c. 350miles and there is 25,000m of vertical gain during the 8 days. To put that into perspective that’s 3 x the height of Mount Everest! The event is completed in pairs. Simon will be racing with his team mate Jeremy who both ride for a shop in Horsham - Freeborn Bikes - and through them are supported by Ellsworth Cycles. If you would like to see what fate lies in store for Simon you can visit: www.transalpchallenge.com
Simon has been told by some friends that he's quite mad for attempting this and that ‘normal’ people would be quite impressed by these efforts. Therefore, he's seeking both individual
and corporate sponsorship to complete stages of the race and hopefully the whole event.
If you are able to assist in sponsorship the web donation page is located at: www.justgiving.com/SimonTAC . THE BEST OF LUCK SIMON FROM EVERYONE AT THE BMC!
SPONSORSHIP NEEDED! BMC staff Carla and Helene will be taking part in the Race for Life at Stamner Park on Saturday 1st July. Since Race for Life began in 1994, women across the country have raised over £100 million for Cancer Research UK. The event which is sponsored by Tesco has set themselves an ambitious but not unrealistic fundraising target of 46 million.
All the money raised will help fund the life-saving research of Cancer Research UK the world’s leading independent organisation dedicated
to cancer research.

BUSINESSES URGED TO ADOPT 'SMARTER WORKING PRACTICES' Article courtesy of 'Business Heads' The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has given its backing to a new campaign aimed at encouraging the widespread adoption of smarter working practices, such as flexible and mobile working. Work Wise UK is a three-year initiative which aims to boost business productivity and competitiveness, as well as improving work-life balance for employees, by increasing the take-up of flexible working options, such as flexitime and shift working, as well as home working and remote working. The number of home workers (defined as people who work mainly in their own home, or in different places using their home as a base), is currently 3.1 million, representing 11% of the total workforce. Work Wise UK believes that this figure could be extended to 50% of the workforce within five years. Sir Digby Jones, Director-General of the CBI, said, 'Flexible, smarter working is here to stay. These new ways of working have benefits for companies seeking to recruit, motivate and retain valued staff and for employees who have hectic or demanding lives. More flexible working benefits the economy through higher productivity and reduced transport pressure'. Phil Flaxton of the IT Forum Foundation, the organisation responsible for the campaign, commented, 'In an increasingly competitive global market, working 9 to 5, five days a week at a central location is an anachronism. It is only culture which dictates this rigid work structure - Work Wise UK aims to break down these traditions and make the UK the most progressive economy in the world'.
More information on the campaign can be found on the Work Wise UK website: www.workwiseuk.org
Article courtesy of 'Business Heads' Supply2.gov.uk is a government-backed initiative that, for the first time, aims to open up lower value public sector contract opportunities to smaller businesses. Registration is required in order to use the portal. This then gives businesses the ability to search or browsed for opportunities offered by the bodies such as the NHS, government agencies and local authorities. It is also possible to opt to receive e-mail alerts as new opportunities are created.Initial registration is free of charge and gives access to opportunities in your local area. Other areas of the country can be accessed, however, wider coverage comes at a price; full details of the range of charges are published on the site: www.supply2.gov.uk For all those small firms offering goods or services potentially relevant to public sector buyers this new portal appears to offer an excellent new marketing opportunity.
SMALL BUSINESS SRVICES COME UNDER FIRE
Article courtesy of 'Business Heads' The Small Business Service (SBS) has been heavily criticised by business groups, following a new report released by the National Audit Office (NAO). It revealed a 'complex network' of schemes designed to support small businesses, with more than 3,000 support programmes being run at national, regional and local level. However, according to the NAO, as the Small Business Service does not set targets to measure its progress, it is difficult to know which programmes are effective. The report also highlights red tape as a key issue concern, with the Small Business Service failing in its mission to identify areas where the regulatory burden on small businesses could be reduced. Reacting to the report, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said that the NAO reiterated many of the concerns the CBI had previously raised regarding the Small Business Service. Sir Digby Jones, CBI Director-General, said, 'The Government set the objective of making the UK the best place in the world to start and grow a business. But that can never happen until the SBS improves its performance and the rest of government takes the needs of small and growing business more seriously'. Meanwhile, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said that the SBS has had little impact on small businesses. David Frost, Director General of the BCC, said, 'What small business needs now more than ever is a strong advocate at the centre of government. This report demonstrates that this simply is not happening. The 25 government departments surveyed in the report simply did not have confidence in the SBS's ability to set the Government's agenda on small business issues'. To make up your own mind and to find out more about the work of the DTI’s Small Business Service visit their website at: www.sbs.gov.uk
PHISHING AND PHARMING
Many of you will have noticed a recent increase in these criminal practices. The perpetrators are becoming more sophisticated, so a reminder of what is happening will not go amiss, even at the risk of stating the obvious! Phishing This involves an e-mail or letter, trying to get you to reveal personal details. Typically they are claiming to be from a person or organisation who may, for instance, have a large sum of money to relocate suddenly, and is hoping that you can put it in your bank account for a while. They just want to steal your identity for a bit so they can open accounts in your name, or order goods to be paid for by you, or just steal money from your accounts. Pharming These appear to be from a Bank, who are saying that you need to get in touch with them soon to clear up some problem with your account. These often look fairly genuine, as they use the correct logos, but may appear odd because, as (hopefully) you don't actually have an account with that bank. They just want your bank details so they can empty your account. Banks and building societies will never send you an e-mail asking you to enter, reconfirm or change your security details. The obvious advice is: 1) Be alert that there is a lot of this about, so GET CYNICAL. 2) NEVER reply to any of these - put it straight in the Trash.
3.5 MINUTE LUNCH BREAK?
Yes, that's three and a half minutes for lunch!
Apparently, research from Dial-a-Phone Pay-As-You-Go discovered this startling fact recently. Most people spend more time (3 times more time) queuing,
choosing and paying for their lunch than actually eating it. This article carries a strong Health Warning - you all need your breaks, away from the screen and the office, getting fresh air, calmly eating something nourishing, so a refreshed and balanced You can carry on working effectively and happily for the rest of the day. Get out there, and be different! Be You - and have the lunch you deserve! |
