FRIESE-GREENE HOUSE - NEW RECEPTION OPEN!

reception As those who use this Media Centre building have seen already, the new Reception Point at Friese-Greene House is now in operation. We think this already confirms what we hoped for all through the planning stages, that it would provide clients and visitors with a proper "Front of House" presence that will be more welcoming and immediate. Anyone coming to the building will be met right off the street, so that they will quickly be directed to where they need to go. Those who have no business in the building will be deterred more readily too (though fortunately this doesn't happen often).
It should be noted that this Reception Point serves both Middle Street sites, so those companies based in 68 Middle Street are welcome to have their visitors received at Friese-Greene House too.

The rear area beyond the Reception is now going to be overhauled, to provide much improved facilities for clients to wait, possibly have informal meetings, and will also house the Information Point.
This continuing work to finish the new kitchen, carry out the alterations to provide a DDA compliant toilet, and then complete the alterations to the rear of the Reception will go on over the next 5-6 weeks. Please would you all remain vigilant for your own safety and that of others, especially for your visitors who do not know their way around.

There will also be periods when those clients on the ground floor who normally use the facilities in this area will need to use the first floor facilities. We would ask you to be understanding about this inconvenience, and to retain your own cups, food, drink etc. on the ground floor to avoid overloading the fridge and cupboards on the first floor.

With apologies for the disruption - it is all in the cause of progress!

SCHOOL 4 LOVERS - A HIP H'OPERA

A Finnish National Opera / Glyndebourne Co-production

school "School 4 Lovers" is a fresh adaption of the classic Mozart opera Così fan tutte. This bold project reinterprets the 18th century opera to create a musical performance fired by hip hop style and culture.

Based at The Brighton Media Centre, Momi Inc has collaborated on this production as advisor to the creative and production teams. School 4 Lovers is a co-production between Glyndebourne Education (East Sussex) and the Finnish National Opera (Helsinki).

"This collaboration sees the world of the classics morphed with the energy of hip-hop. Orchestras deliver raw beats, MCs and sopranos take centre stage as hip hop culture is set against grand opera house backdrops and 18th century Naples is transformed into a modern inner city story of love and fidelity."

School 4 Lovers opens at Glyndebourne Opera House on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th March 2006.
The production travels to Helsinki for performances on the 5th & 7th June 2006 at the Finnish National Opera.

With a special ticket offer for Brighton Media Centre companies with tickets at £10 (full price £20).

If you would like to know more about this project you can email Kentake at Momi Inc at: contact@momiinc.co.uk

Chancellor receives boost ahead of Budget

Article courtesy of Business Heads:

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed a record monthly budget surplus for January 2006, due largely to a significant surge in tax receipts.
According to the ONS, the public sector showed a surplus on current budget of £15.3bn in January 2006, compared with £12.3bn in January 2005.

Public sector net borrowing showed a surplus of £12.6bn, compared with £8.8bn last January. Corporation tax receipts rose by 52%, totalling £10.8bn, while a rise in income and capital gains tax receipts also helped to boost the public coffers.
The news is likely to be welcomed by Chancellor Gordon Brown, and increases the likelihood that he will be able to meet his 2005 Pre-Budget Report borrowing target of £37bn.

Furthermore, economists believe that Mr Brown will now be under less pressure to introduce any significant tax increases or spending cuts in his forthcoming Budget on 22 March. The news comes amid rising speculation that this could be Mr Brown's last Budget before he embarks on a political leadership campaign.

PENSION WARNINGS!

Article courtesy of Business Heads:

Even though many of you feel that the day for drawing your pension is light years away, there are developments on the Pensions scene that some of us need to be aware of. The regulations are changing as the Government struggles to find a way to balance the books on making sure we provide for ourselves in our dotage. Here are two examples of ways we are being affected:

Compulsory pensions 'threaten small firms'

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has warned that introducing a system of compulsory employer pension contributions could damage small businesses.

The employers' organisation has unveiled a series of proposals in response to the Turner Commission's recommendations.

The CBI has given its support to a system of automatic enrolment in pension schemes for employees, which it believes will do the most to encourage increased pensions saving. However, the group is concerned that forcing businesses to contribute to pension schemes could threaten job creation, and could also put some smaller firms out of business.
The CBI's recommendations include the introduction of a Pension Builder plan to boost employee pension contributions, together with additional support for smaller businesses with fewer than 25 employees, in the form of either a Partnership Pension in which the Government would pay a proportion of the contributions, or alternatively a Pension Tax Credit. The system would be voluntary, but those companies choosing to opt out would be obliged to explain their decision to their employees.
John Cridland, CBI deputy director-general said, 'The CBI believes there must be an equal right to opt out for both business and employee so individual economic realities can be taken into account. Our proposals are therefore designed to cajole employers, not compel them, into voluntarily contributing to an employee pension saving scheme'.
The full CBI response can be viewed on the CBI website: www.cbi.org.uk

During your working life, if you had any time at home looking after children up to the age of 16, known as HRP (Home Responsibility Protection), you must notify the Pension Office to get your credits back for that period towards your pension.

BMC Exhibitions

Exhibition Space

"Modern Natures"

exhibition There is an exhibition taking place in the Friese Greene House Gallery running from Monday 27th March to 3rd April. The Exhibition is called "Modern Nature" and is by four local artists.

For artist Justin Weeks the medium of paint is a great subject within itself. He manipulates it, building up a dynamic, fluid and sensual rhythm of colour and texture.

The images that appear are organic and transcendent forms. They evoke the senses of nature rather that depicting it. He explores the formations that lie within creation and nature. He captures the atmosphere of places, like the malevolence of sea crashing against rocks and sometimes stormy and imaginary landscapes.

He embraces the improvisational freedom and searching upon the canvas. A large part of the process is the observation. This brings about balance and containment that reacts with the chaos of calligraphy and painterly agitations.

If you would like to find out more about exhibiting in our Gallery, please contact Helene Taylor on 01273 201371, or gallery@mediacentre.org.
