Farewell Dan!

Dan Dan unfortunately for us left the BMC last Friday (1st September) after working here for a year. He had moved up to London with his girlfriend and decided that commuting to Brighton everyday was too tiring.

Dan contributed to many areas of Brighton Media Centre life during his time here including building and designing our new website which is very near to completion, he will continue to work on a freelance basis until it's finished. We will keep you posted as to when the launch date will be.

Dan will be sorely missed by all of the team here at the Brighton Media Centre.

However, we all wish him the best of luck for the future and he's promised he will come back and visit us some time soon.

FIRE PRECAUTIONS - IMPORTANT

With the change in Fire Regulations in commercial premises, all businesses now have an increased range of responsibilities to prevent fire, and prevent any negative effects of fire should it break out. Here at BMC we are moving forward to ensure that companies within our buildings are protected as far as possible in a general way, as required by these Regulations.

In order for our efforts to be effective, there is also a responsibility on the part of all building users to play their part. For individual companies, this means ensuring that you have carried out the necessary level of Fire Risk Assessment within your own Licenced workspace, and maintain that agreed Assessment. BMC are working to try and make this as simple and cheap as possible through what we already provide, and are also looking at a standard method of helping businesses with 5 or fewer staff to comply at very low cost to them. Larger companies than that have to take additional measures, as has been pointed out recently by ourselves.

Everyone needs to be aware of some simple rules, raised by our Fire Risk Assessor in his Report. These are:

  • NEVER PROP DOORS OPEN where this would allow fire or smoke onto the main stairway,corridor, or other Protected Means of Escape.

  • ALWAYS LEAVE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS IN PLACE, which is on their holders on the wall, so they are always available in the correct place for use in case of a small fire outbreak.

  • ENSURE YOUR STAFF AND VISITORS ALL KNOW THE PROCEDURE IN THE EVENT OF FIRE; this is the main task of each companies' appointed Fire Warden.

  • EACH OFFICE MUST TAKE ALL STEPS NEEDED TO PREVENT FIRE; it is each companies responsibility to work safely.

Thank you for giving these points your full priority.

BMC Management.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SIMON FROM ARGYLL!

A few months back (featured in June's enews) you may remember that BMC client Simon Turner from Argyll was competing in the Trans Alp Challenge (TAC) which is an 8 day stage race, completed mostly off road on mountain bikes, involving 350 miles and 25,000m of vertical gain - 3 x the height of Everest!

Mad or what?

Simon Well it seems his madness paid off because Simon and his team mate Jeremy not only completed the challenge but they managed to finish in the top 100!

So far Simon has managed to raise a staggering £1,165 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The sponsor page is still up and running and receiving donations which you can easily do so by clicking here: www.justgiving.com/SimonTAC

Everyone here at the BMC is well impressed with your effort and the amount you have raised for charity - WELL DONE!

If you would like more information about the Motor Neurone Disease Association then please go to: www.mndassociation.org

BCC calls for Small Business Service to be axed

Article Courtesy of 'Business Heads'

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has called on the Government to close the Small Business Service which it says has proved 'virtually ineffective'. According to research conducted by the business group, the Small Business Service has failed to deliver on six of the seven themes set out in the Government's action plan for small business:

1. building an enterprise culture - 83% of business reported no improvement in this area, and 24% reported a decline in the enterprise environment;

2. encouraging a more dynamic start-up market - 86% did not feel that a more dynamic market has been encouraged, and of these 27% believe that the market has worsened;

3. building the capability for small business growth - 53% of businesses felt that the capability for small business growth has remained the same, while 34% think it has worsened;

4.improving access to finance for small business growth - 83% of businesses did not believe that it has become easier to access finance, while 32% believe it has become more difficult;

5.improving small businesses' experience of Government services - 90% of businesses saw no improvement in their use of Government services, with 42% reporting that the experience had worsened;

6.developing better regulation and policy - 93% of businesses reported no improvement in regulation and policy, with 52% believing that it has deteriorated.

The one area which did see improvements, according to the survey, related to encouraging enterprise in disadvantaged communities, with 30% of businesses reporting that there had been tangible improvements.David Frost, BCC Director-General, said, 'The conclusion to be drawn from these findings is that businesses' experience of efforts to help them is not what it should be and radical reform is required. Looking to the long-term, we need to develop regional and local solutions that are business-driven and business-led'.

BMC NEED YOUR IDEAS!

What would you do with all this space?

:gallery greenscreen soundstudio

For those of you who are unaware in the basement of our Friese Greene site (15-17 Middle Street) we have 3 seperate spaces that vary in size.

The Studio Space is 1717sq ft overall and has a green screen (infinity cove), kitchen facilities as well as other adjoining rooms.

The Gallery is an industrial looking space which is 750sq ft and then the Sound Studio next door is 400sq ft - so all in all a large area of space to play with.

At the moment we are exploring ideas and ways in which to develop and make maximum use of the space.

This is where you the clients come into it!

We would like to hear your suggestions on what potential you think the space has or maybe if there are facilities you would like to see at the BMC that we don't have already.

If you haven't seen the space and would like to, a member of the BMC staff would be happy to show you around.

If you would like to share your weird and wonderful ideas with us you can do so either by email to: helenet@mediacentre.org or if you would like to remain anonymous we will be putting a suggestion box in the reception area of 15-17 Middle Street.

All suggestions welcome!
