BMC ENews - all the useful flotsom and jetsom of BMC!

Forward Motion Picture

The latest work at BMC Gallery is by Martin Robinson, who produces images made by a camera he designed and built himself.

"After investigating the differences between the moving and the static image, I was prompted to create a way of combining the workings of a movie camera and a simple still camera.  I have been driven by the prospect of producing an image - or the possibility of an image - that manages to incorporate many seemingly disparate elements, such as time, distance and light.  As a result of working through this idea over the past 18 months I have now reached a stage where it is possible to produce experimental test prints, using modified camera equipment.

I would like to emphasise the concept of progression and see the exhibiting of my work as a vital part of the whole process of discovery and development.  It is important for me to share the freshness and potentiality of the project as it stands allowing for further expansion of the idea."

First aid

Do you have a first aider in your office? Are you interested in first aid training?

Under the 1981 Health & Safety Regulations employers are legally obliged to provide adequate first aid provision for staff. Companies with less than 50 employees should provide at least one first aider.

BMC would like to organise first aid training, and if enough people are interested we can host a course on-site at a reduced rate.

We've provisionally booked the Emergency Aid for Appointed Persons course for Wednesday 4th June. We need at least 6 people to take part. The cost will be £60 + VAT per person and the course takes a full day.

If you'd like to take part, please email emily@mediacentre.org

Au revoir Jemima

After two and a half years at BMC, Jemima will be moving on at the end of April to work for journalism.co.uk.

"I' feel like I've left my mark on BMC - hopefully a good one!

I've learnt a huge amount and made some very good friends. You've all been great fun to work with and for!"

Jemima will still be based in Middle Street - but just remember not to ask her about broken light bulbs after 25th April...

If you're desperate to send a farewell message, please email jemima@mediacentre.org.

Adios!

Au revoir Jemima

Pieter-Dirk Uys @ Theatre Royal

Our very own Facilitate have sponsored this event by cross-dressing satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys, who'll be turning the spotlight on South Africa's AIDS pandemic for this one off show.

Uys’ on stage caricatures expose the hypocrisy, ignorance and outright denial of the AIDS crisis in Southern Africa.  In between his incarnations Uys tells sobering stories from the frontline; of schools that refuse to educate about and dispense condoms for fear of encouraging sex, and of the urban legend that raping a virgin cures the disease.

Foreign Aids is a thought-provoking and hilarious one-man show, in which Pieter-Dirk Uys, with deep humanity and compassion, finds humour among the horror.  Wit that truly bites.

Sunday 18th May, 7.30pm
Tickets £16, £11.50, £8.50, £6

Tell me a little more about yourself...

Alastair Dodd

BMC took Ali for a delicious birthday lunch at Boardwalk last month and, once plied with alcohol and a hearty game of wack-a-mole, our shy retiring techie began to reveal his soft spots...

1 Describe your ideal day.
The day I get married to the one I love. That covers it I think.

2 Who would play you in the film of your life?
Me - don't think anybody else could manage to get the mix of humility, modesty, bloody-minded ness and intelligence right.
Ali vs. wack-a-mole: The Ultimate Contest

3 Pet hates?
Lies, stupidity, football, and I despise hypocrisy.

4 What would your epitaph be?
I tried.

5 What was your first ever job?
Nightcrew at Tescos. Dull but good money and also explains why I'm quite a night owl.

6 What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about love.

7 Where would you like to be in 10 years?
On a beach, in the shade.

8 If you were a car, what would you be?
MGB pre 1972 with wire wheels. Soft top. British racing green.

9 Favourite song of all time?
Tricky to choose that one...so this is a favorite of mine at the moment "Best Work" By "The Whitlams".

10 Favourite word?
Plinth.

11 Tell us either a dark secret, or the most embarrassing moment you've had...
In a hotel on holiday, I was in a friends room and I rushed off to get something from my room. I opened the door to my room (or so I thought) and saw a completely naked woman, dripping wet, who had obviously just got out of the shower in front of me. Jaw dropped and I froze. She said "Sorry!" and went off to get a towel. I slowly closed the door and left. Like most hotels, each floor was identical and I forgot to go up a floor - so this was the room below. Breakfast the next morning with her on the table next door was a little embarrassing....

12 If you had a tail, what kind of tail would it be?
Prehensile of course.. but looking like a cats tail (with fur - fur less tails look horrible).

13 Any other information you might wish to reveal - any amusing anecdotes?
Blue Peter badge winner & runner up in a competition in 1982 about energy conservation. That any good?

Fancy a grilling? Email info@mediacentre.org or call 201375.
