BMC HOSTS TRANSITION TOWNS MEETINGS

As part of our policy of being involved with the local community, and taking a further role in Corporate Social Responsibility, Brighton Media Centre has been hosting meetings of the "Business and Economics Group" of the local Transition Town movement.

The concept of Transition Towns was started in Totnes, in Devon, as a response to a perception that there are large and inevitable changes happening on a planetary scale, which are already impacting the way we need to plan, in particular Global Warming and Peak Oil. It has become clear that the weather cycles are altering to more extreme and less reliable patterns, as a result of various forms of human-derived pollution such as carbon dioxide, methane, cfc's and so on added to other "natural" cycles which compound and increase the disturbance to previously stable patterns.

At the same time, society has become more and more reliant on energy derived largely from oil, but also from other fossil fuels. These are being used up at unsustainable rates, so availability is decreasing, costs are rising, and the added pollution is also ramping up the Global Warming problem. It is calculated that we are at the threshold of the maximum oil production level, and that from now on the planet will have to manage on a reducing supply - about 3% less each year. It is clear that this will have all kinds of effects, from moderate to extremely severe, and that we all need to rethink how we go about our lives to cope with this and with climate change.

There are now at least 30 Transition Towns in the UK, with others world wide. In England there are already large cities such as Bristol and Nottingham involved as well as smaller towns like Lewes and Bath, right down to village communities. The main effort at present appears to be getting the information "out there" and recognised, and this is seen as key to increasing resilience and mitigating the effects we are all experiencing, and which will inevitably continue to increase each year.

Employers' year end returns

Article Courtesy of Business Heads.

HM Revenue & Customs has started to issue the P35 year end return forms to employers. Anyone running a payroll for their business must submit a return by the 19 May detailing employee tax and National Insurance for the tax year to 5 April 2008. Returns filed late incur a penalty of £100 per month.

Those employers who have previously submitted their returns online will be receiving their notification also online. If you are registered with HMRC for the online employer service it is important that you check the HMRC website regularly for notifications such this and for employee tax codes for the new tax year (2008/9).

BusinessHeads payroll clients do not need to worry about any of this; we will be preparing their returns and sending them to clients for checking and signature, before submitting them online. If you need further help or information on the year end returns please contact us on 01273 882200, or e-mail: carole@businessheads.co.uk

Boost for new media job seekers in Brighton

digitaljobfair Wired Sussex, a not-for-profit organization which works with digital media companies based in Brighton and beyond, is launching Brighton Digital Media Jobs Fair on February 13 2008.

The fair will be held from 12 - 9pm at Jury's Inn hotel (directly behind Brighton's railway station) and will bring together the cream of the city's thriving digital media companies under one roof to meet and talk to job-seekers.

The event will be run in association with The Argus Newspaper. Companies exhibiting include creators of Second Life Linden Lab, the hugely successful Spannerworks, Cogapp, WPM Internet, Madgex, Relentless, Club Penguin (Part of the Walt Disney Corporation), NCSoft, and Designate. The fair will be extensively promoted through The Argus, through outdoor advertising at Brighton & Hove station and through Wired Sussex and exhibiting companies own networks.

Wired Sussex are launching the job fair as a direct response to many of its 1000+ digital media member companies with significant recruitment issues. Though the organization has achieved much in terms of raising the profile of the new media industry in the south, it recognizes there's bigger job to do in terms of beating the so-called 'brain-drain', as it's estimated that over half the city's economically-active population still leave the city every day to earn a living.

Phil Jones, MD of Wired Sussex, said 'There's a disconnect between the number of fast-growing media companies desperate for the right staff in order to exploit opportunities available to them, and the number of people with the right skill-sets who still feel they need to get on a train to London every day in order to further their careers. This fair aims to address that by bringing these 2 groups together'.

Companies interested in exhibiting should contact Wired Sussex directly - email Jo Roberts: jo@wiredsussex.com.

For those interested in attending as a job-seeker can register for free tickets at www.brightonjobfair.co.uk

Vote the Spiegeltent back!

Brighton Festival isn't the same without it - please vote!!

The Argus are running a campaign on their website to persuade St. Peters Church to give permission for the Spiegeltent to return to Brighton on land owned by the council adjacent to the church.

If you feel strongly that you want the Spiegeltent to return, please click here and vote yes to the question: Should St Peter's Church give its blessing to having a Spiegeltent next to it? (the argus site is a bit weird and you will be directed to a 'Sorry' page - just click on the local news link and scroll down for the Spiegeltent vote box)

The Fringe team need your support now to ensure this fantastic event graces Brighton again!
