Fastnet win small business ISP of the year

BMC's internet services provider, Fastnet International, has won the Internet Industry Award for Best Small Business ISP.

Brighton-based Fastnet beat competition from some of the UK's largest ISP's including Pipex and Demon - confirming the excellent service that they provide for BMC.

Fastnet were congratulated by Stephen Timms, Minister for E-Commerce, at the award ceremony in London's Grosvenor Square on 24th February. The panel of judges were impressed with Fastnet's ability to deliver an extensive range of value added services for small businesses and their commitment to first class technical support.

Managing Director Joe Kerr was clearly proud of his team's effort. "Receiving this award has given everyone a real boost. It's a great start to the year and I am delighted that our efforts in providing quality Internet services to the business community have been recognised by the judges". Check out their site at http://www.fastnet.co.uk

Business opportunities in Canada

BMC companies are invited to join the Team Canada 2003 trade mission events in London on 31st March and 1st April.

George Edwards, Senior Business Development Officer at the Canadian High Commission, has extended a personal invitation to BMC companies to attend. The Trade Mission will focus on promoting investment, trade and technology development in a number of areas including culture, education, environment, health, information and communications technology and life sciences. Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien will be leading the mission of government ministers and industry executives.

High Commissioner Mel Cappe said "This is an opportunity for British business to gain access, contacts and information direct from key players in Canadian government, business and science."

Full programme and booking information can be found at www.teamcanada.org.uk but hurry - registration closes on 7th March.

Free E-Business consultation

To address this confusing issue of how the Internet can help a business, BMC-based web agency Nixon McInnes has developed a 'try before you buy' offer for organisations based in Sussex with 5 employees or more.

The offer provides the opportunity for managers to spend 2 hours with an Internet consultant free of charge, with recommendations documented in a report. According to Nixon McInnes, there are also various means of funding that can help the Sussex SME with the costs associated with taking advantage of the Internet, and use of such schemes can bring e-commerce within the reach of even a small 5-person organisation.

Companies wishing to contact Nixon McInnes about the 'try before you buy' offer can either find out more at the Nixon McInnes website www.nixmc.com/try or call direct on 0845 345 3462.

A plea on behalf of Phoebe

As some of you may know, Ian Elwick's 2½ year old daughter Phoebe is having some problems with her development. The diagnosis has been epilepsy but the cause is unknown; the consensus is that Phoebe has a problem with her brain-nerve connections.

We are contacting you in the hope that you may be able to help us raise sponsorship for Phoebe to attend a special programme run by a charity called the British Institute for Brain Injured Children (BIBIC) which provides development programmes to help children achieve their potential.

BIBIC has an active fundraising initiative and it is through this that we are hoping to raise funds to help Phoebe. If you are taking part in any marathons or suitable events, would you be prepared to seek sponsorship on Phoebe's behalf? Could you contribute foreign coins, stamps or used printer cartridges to the BIBIC recycling scheme?

If you could help in any way, please call Ian on 201373 or email ian@mediacentre.org . Watch this space for more information on cartridge recycling.

Us 3 take you for a drink!

Biz Vizion's Barclay Thompson bravely accepted the challenge of being taken for a drink by Jemima, Carla & Emily last month. Conversation quickly turned to Barclay's musical exploits - his band The Cadillacs are ripping it up about town so keep an eye out! Check out www.thecadillacs.co.uk . More from Barclay in 'Tell me a little more about yourself' below...

Would you like Jemima, Emily & Carla to take you for a drink? There's no catch, honestly. First come, first served. (Groan...)

Please email jemima@mediacentre.org .

Recycling!

If you don't already recycle waste from your office, why not start now during your spring clean?

Local firm Magpie can recycle paper, card, plastics and aluminium cans. Collections are once each week from all BMC sites with reusable recycling bags that cost just £1 each. Ask reception for a recycling bag.

Unwanted CD's (Tatu especially welcome) can also be recycled - please just hand them in to reception.

Out of date software and hardware can also be reused. BMC runs a scheme to donate unwanted computer equipment to Techknowledgy UK (www.tky.org.uk) who reuse the computers for training projects in Ghana. Please hand equipment to reception and we will store it until the next collection.

If you'd like to know more about any of our recycling schemes, please email jemima@mediacentre.org.
