New Exhibiton at BMC Gallery

Lamb Heart Phesant

Still Life by Simon Ward

The next exhibition at BMC Gallery will be a series of photographs by Simon Ward, who has recently won the Re:creation photography award for his collection of images inspired by, amongst other things, 18th century Masters.

“Photography for me has to release a kind of physical emotion placing me as close to the subject as I can, experiencing a personal challenge to represent the subject in its greatest veracity despite the intensity of the situation.

The elegance of the work falls between the technique and actual physical entity of the animal. Each image is created digitally on a scanner with the real artefact. This allows me to absorb the smells and texture forming a simple but carefully composed reflection, a stillness of life, a focus to detail made by a single brushstroke of ‘scanned light’.”
Simon Ward 2003

Brighton artist Simon has also just won the Unscene competition - dubbed as the student Turner Prize 2003 and been shortlisted for The International Open Image Competition, so this show will be an ideal opportunity to view the work of an obviously up-and-coming young photographer.

Design for Hastings Media Centre Plans were revealed this week for a striking glass-fronted, contemporary style building which will be home to Hastings new Media Centre.

As part of a £160million scheme to regenerate the town centre, the job should be completed by summer next year.

Architects BBM Sustainable form Lewes are designing the scheme and Ian Elwick and Barclay Thompson of Biz Vizion Ltd providing consultancy and advice to SEEDA, as to how to develop the media centre model for Hastings.

Project manager Clive Taylor was quoted as saying:
"Externally it will have a character of its own and internally we will look to reflect what Brighton Media Centre has done."

Fancy a lift?
Brighton Beach will be the location of the Brighton Fringe’s smallest venue this year - a two metre square custom built lift.

Situated on the West Pier Groyne near the Ellipse, the 5065 Lift will be running a daily programme of uplifting events from May 3-11. The 5065 Lift’s hosts are comedy trio The Giant Pineapple Boys and the tiny venue will be home to 99 performances by up and coming acts ranging from comedy to live music.

The event is sponsored by Cafédirect, which buys from farmers at a fair price. In the spirit of Cafédirect’s principles, audiences will be asked to pay what they think is fair at the end of every show they attend.

For further information on the programme, log onto their website: www.5065.co.uk

We've provisionally booked the Emergency Aid for Appointed Persons course for Wednesday 4th June.
