Facilities at the Brighton Media Centre

Brighton Media Centre has opened up it's doors to the Brighton Fringe Festival!

The Basement area has been alive and buzzing with artists, performers and the sound of Festival FM who are broadcasting from our very own Sound Studio, live on digital FM, Oneword Radio.

Friese Greene House has attracted acts from across the globe, with an abundance of fresh new talent including dance, theatre, and art.

From traditional seaside entertainment with a wicked twist - a dark and contemporary Punch and Judy - to a living installation tackling today's hot topic of climate change, there's an amazing variety of acts and exhibitions.

gallery

For those of you who aren't aware Don (BMC MD) has been granted a license which allows us to sell alchohol on the premises which we will do so before and after performances. There will be emails and flyers to notify clients when this will happening if you wish to pop down and visit the gallery or even watch a show. This shouldn't interfere with client working life as all performances will take place in the evening except for weekend matinee's.

To launch the space we will be having a joint soiree with Festival FM on Thursday 24th May between 4.30pm and 7pm in the Basement area. Food, drink and entertainment will be provided.

It would be lovely to see as many of you there as possible! More details will be circulated nearer the time.

Meeting Rooms at the Brighton Media Centre

May 2007 sees the opening of our "New Look" meeting rooms, now offering complimentary refreshments, including tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and sweets!

meetingroom

So far this has been a success with meeting rooms now busier than ever. Each room has been re-painted, giving a fresher feel and there are further plans, including art work to add to a more relaxed feel. Our aim is to offer a professional, affordable and relaxing environment for you to meet clients.

Due to these changes - which we hope you will agree are an improvement - the meeting room costs will increase from 1st June to £15.00 per hour + vat.

If you have not seen them, please come and have a look, we would welcome your feedback!

For all meeting room bookings please contact either Helene or Caroline on the main reception number 01273 201100.

Small companies 'unaware' of R&D tax relief

Article Courtesy of, 'Business Heads'

Many small companies are missing out potential Research and Development (R&D) tax relief, as the result of a lack of awareness, according to a new study.

It suggests that only one in five understand the R&D tax relief system, and that less than half have applied for the relief. However, half of those who did apply had their claims accepted by HM Revenue & Customs.R&D tax relief applies to limited companies which undertake a research project with the aim of developing a new scientific innovation.

HMRC says that in order to qualify they need to satisfied that:

  • it is not capital expenditure;
  • it is attributable to relevant research and development;
  • it is incurred on staffing costs, or consumable stores;
  • any intellectual property created as a result of the R&D to which the expenditure is attributable is vested in the company;
  • the company does not incur the expenditure as a sub-contractor;
  • the expenditure is not subsidised;
  • the expenditure is incurred on or after 1 April 2000

IF YOU ARE AN EMPLOYER BASED IN BRIGHTON AND HOVE...

City College would like to ask you to consider taking an International Business student for 6 weeks as a work placement from 21st May to 29 June 2007. The students are studying International Business Studies with the Institut ARCA in Paris. All speak English to a minimum 'good' level, most are competent in three languages and the students would be able to work on projects such as:

  • Market surveys developing recommendations for exporting your products/services internationally
  • Sourcing new international business prospects and build a company database for marketing
  • Acting as an international salesperson to sell and negotiate
  • Researching transport costs for international delivery of goods & products.
  • Carrying out a survey to find new products to sell.
  • Producing a new product /service brochure for international markets.
  • Improving product/service branding for international markets
  • Assisting the Import-Export director.
  • Business Administration:

The intention is for the employer to provide the student with suitable work of an appropriate standard that will enhance their learning.

This can be done through a set project brief or ongoing work, with real benefit to the business.

The employer must agree to set and adequately supervise the project/s, and further have two brief meetings with the City College tutor to discuss the student's progress.
Convenient times for these visits can be arranged through the tutor involved and the meetings will take place on the premises where the student works. The employer should agree to treat the students as employees for the purpose of employer's public liability.

This is an exciting opportunity for employers and students alike to gain a valuable experience with long term benefits for your business.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Hannah to discuss your requirements, who can then send you CV's for you to decide which student is right for you.

You can contact Hannah Harbottle on 01273 667756 or email: hhb@ccb.ac.uk
