BMC Christmas party! This year we have decided to host our client christmas party here at the Brighton Media Centre. The event will take place in our gallery at 15-17 Middle Street on Thursday 4th December between 5.30pm - 10pm. We appreciate that this is a busy time for everyone both business wise and socially so we decided to keep it fairly simple rather like the summer barbeque. Companies can come down and have a drink and some food and not feel obligated to stay all evening. Although that's not an excuse for you not to come at all, we would love to see all Companies from each of our three sites.
Hope to see you all there!

After the success of the last networking event, where BMC Client Tom Nixon from Nixon Mcinnes gave an impressive talk on 'Democratic Company Culture' we are pleased to anounce that we have another date in early December, probably on the 9th (tbc). This will be on the theme of 'Winning More Business', and will be presented by someone from Business Link, who will also be giving details of how Companies can benefit from their free Business Clinic system. For those that came and benefited from the last event, please spread the word to your colleagues and business associates as the more people there the better the chance of meeting like minded people. An email will be sent out soon with further details of the evening and a confirmed date. Watch this space! |

Sussex Enterprise Conference Article courtesy of Don Elwick who attended the Conference on October 14th.
The Brighton Centre Main Hall was jam-packed with people from every kind of local company, eager to hear this charismatic business maverick giving us insights into his particular take on the business world. He first established that almost all the audience consisted of business owners - quite something, to realise that we were in a room full of hundreds and hundreds of entrepreneurs, probably all looking for that special inspiration that could make the difference between an ordinary business, and a business that really makes it happen. He first described something that showed the way to get an edge - be simple! He had read in the news that the government was backing RBS shares to the price of 65p each - and looking at the Stock Market index, he noticed that the RBS shares were 55p each. No catch here - he went off and bought shares, and within a few hours, the price had gone up to 71p. Simple. For him, this was an example of a Value Proposition, something where you could calculate the value of the outcome against the input. He describes the UK Financial institutions as having a "herd mentality" - they just follow each other, up, down, sideways - and don't get to understand what they could do for themselves. The advise is that it is much better to judge things on your own view - you can live with your own mistakes, not so easy on someone else's! He left school at 16, no qualifications, to make his own way, as his father wanted him to go into the family textile company - so he got a job in Sales, and within a few years tried to get a job in Recruitment. He was turned down at the interview as he had no direct experience, no qualifications, too young - so he decided he would do it himself, do it big, and started his own company of head-hunters, with just him, a desk and a phone. He landed his first contract by persuading the Store Manager at Asda to become the Store Manager at Sainsbury's in the same town - Milton Keynes. Everyone was happy, including him for his large commission - and it was a result of being naïve, asking obvious questions, and keeping it simple. This turned into a multi-million pound organisation based on those precepts, and on the other major principle he holds: Business is not about a product - the success comes from the person. Now is the time to protect your people! By developing and encouraging his people, he started 11 new businesses from his original one, and eventually sold them all. One thing that happened was that one of his high flyers would come to his office, to hand in their notice and say they were going it alone… instead of feeling negative, he would say: "Great! Why don't you also take those people who work with you, and also this database of customers, and I could back you up - how much do you need?" and turn a possible loss into a new associated business, with him owning a chunk of the equity, and being able to help that new operation succeed. A very alternative notion of protecting your people, with a major Win-Win outcome!
The UK's competitive telecoms market is equipped to make the most of the opportunities arising from the rapidly developing Next Generation Analysis (NGA) in Broadband, concludes the CAIO Review, an independent study of the UK's telecoms market carried out for the DBERR and HM Treasury. The Report, which stresses the importance of the NGA to the UK's future prosperity, recommends an active role for the government in monitoring development of networks and supporting rollout by introducing measures to lower costs without market distortion. Specifically, it recommends:

Winesmith - Wine Tasting Advert placed on behalf of Christian Smith Do something different this year to celebrate Christmas with a Winesmith wine tasting. Maybe you're having a party at home, or an office 'works do', or maybe you know someone who would like to? No matter where in the world we travel to, wine brings people together. It's rich history extends to the Neolithic and the first glimmering of civilisation. Today we have thousands of varieties to choose from and very sophisticated production methods. Some would say that wine, and in particular wine tasting, is shrouded in mystery. Allow us to de-mystify the world of wine with you through informal and informative wine tasting. Maybe you'd like to incorporate a 'blind tasting' or even a wine challenge? Whatever you choose, we ensure it is pitched at a level to ensure everyone learns something new. Perfect for birthdays, house parties, dinner with friends, an employee thank you or entertaining clients! Christian Smith trained at the world-famous Plumpton College, England. He is currently testing and tasting competition wines from all over the globe, and has previously worked in southern France, Napa Valley California, and spent three years making gold medal-winning sparkling wine in England. He also has a keen interest in organic and biodynamic wine-making,and wherever possible these wines will form part of any tasting you choose. You’ll find his passion, natural flair, and breadth of knowledge will keep you engaged throughout. Which tasting would you like? Introductory
A good starting point with a selection of 7-8 wines from around
the world. Here you learn how to taste wine and spot quality. Americas
Explore the different grapes and regions with wines from
North and South America including California, Chile, and
Argentina. New World
This is a good follow-up to the Introductory tasting, focusing
more on the structure and balance of wine and winemaking. English
English wine is starting to receive world-wide recognition.
We will enjoy a variety including some sparkling wine
and delicious rosé. New Zealand
Discover why New Zealand wine is so good, from the classic
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to the less understood Pinot
Noir. Spanish
There’s more than Rioja on offer! Try a range of different
styles from the traditional to the up and coming. Tour The World
Choose one grape variety, for example Merlot or Pinot grigio,
and discover it’s different expressions depending on where in
the world it’s grown. Sherry
Spain’s best kept secret! Forget your grandmother’s
warm sweet stuff, and discover the fantastically cold
crisp dry styles through to sumptuous desert sherries.
This tasting will be a revelation to you! How does it work? The minimum booking is for 10 people (we can do a tasting with fewer but the minimum charge is for 10). Your winesmith will arrive at your home or venue half an hour before the start to set up, bringing 7-8 wines, glasses, and spittoons. The tasting will take about 2 hours. It’s a good idea to provide nibbles and/or cheese for the reds, and please supply water biscuits. We require £100 deposit with your booking and the balance is payable on the day of your tasting. There may be a charge for travel depending on location. Call now to book your tasting on 07738 836 029 or email Christian at christiansmith99@hotmail.com
