Introduction to Studio Lighting

With Paul Grant Professional Photographer and Lecturer

Course Description

This is a hands-on course for people with some experience in photography who would like to learn to get the best from studio lighting set ups. You will not only learn how to use key lighting techniques but also how to apply these techniques to portraiture and still life using Studio Flash and Tungsten lights.

Equipment

You will need to bring your own Digital SLR (please ensure that it can take a pc sync or hotshoe sync). Preferably you should also have good access to a version of Adobe Photoshop.  Studio and lighting accessories will be provided.

What I will learn

The course will enable you to;

  • Explore the many aspects of professional studio lighting using advanced techniques to enhance your practice and improve your portfolio

Course Content

Week 1

Working with still life subjects;

  • Introduction to Studio Flash and Tungsten lighting
  • How to use a light meter to achieve balanced lighting
  • How to set up basic lighting rigs for and product shots
Week 2

Working with still life subjects;

  • How to create advanced lighting rigs
  • Styling with lights
  • Working with shadows
  • Working with filters scrims and reflectors
Week 3

Working with Models and Portraiture;

  • Single model portrait sessions
  • Mood lighting
  • Posing/composition
  • Basics of make-up and styling
Week 4

Working with Models and Portraiture;

  • Multi-model portrait sessions social/bands
  • The drama of light
  • Mixed lighting techniques
Week 5

Working with Green Screen;

  • Introduction to working with Green Screens for digital photography
  • Efficient working practices
  • Portfolio Review of work covered
