WORLD CUP IN THE WILD

England are out. The last world cups's finalists are out... but at least the sun is out! Now we can relax in glorious summer weather and enjoy the beautiful game without the risk of a heart attack.

While the host's team failed to light up their stadiums with dazzling displays of footwork and ball control expertise, some of the local fauna were filmed giving it a go:

THREE PEAK CHALLENGE

Over the weekend of 21/23 May, Tim Griffiths of Hillingar took part in and completed the 3 Peaks Challenge as part of a teams from the Cadia (Gatwick Diamond) Networking group.

“The 3 Peaks Challenge is to climb the 3 highest peaks in Scotland, Wales and England in the space of 24 hours. That means setting off early to climb Ben Nevis (1344m) starting at only 20m then driving to the Lake District to climb Scafell Pike (977m) starting at 70m with the last of the ascent and the descent being done in the dark and then driving to Snowdonia for the final peak – Snowdon (1067m) and starting at 359m.  The total ascent – and descent is 2939m.  The challenge is a very tough one – especially as there is no guarantee of fine weather – we have to expect cold, rain and wind - some will be in the dark and the only chance of sleep is in the mini-bus. All being well we shall be celebrating over breakfast in Llanberis before making our way home.”

The team are aiming to raise £10,000 for local charities and have so far raised in excess of £7,300 but are looking to find the last £2,400 for reach the target.

DC Storm to 'Paddle Round The Pier'

Saturday 3rd July

Welcome one and all to the greatest sea battle since Sir Francis Drake beat that Spanish Armada bunch of dinghy thingy's!

DC Storm are entering 'Paddle Round The Pier' on Brighton/Hove Beach for charity. The three worthy charities this year are the RNLI, Whoopsadaisy & Surfaid. We have created two just giving pages for the RNLI and Whoopsadaisy, but unfortunately Surfaid isn’t available to do this. We have sponsorship forms for those that would maybe like to donate cash or a cheque on the day, and we think that these funds should probably be in favour of Surfaid. But that’s for PRTP to decide.

The event consists of building a supposedly sea worthy vessel, and paddling it around the now derelict West Pier on Hove seafront. Sounds simple ey? Well it would be if it wasn't a 21m square raft resembling half a football pitch, (with 11 sailors re-enacting the famous 1990 semi final England vs Germany penalty shoot out, while trying to navigate the course!) built by folks who have no business building such things!

The PRTP festival is on Saturday 3rd/Sunday 4th July, although the main event takes place on Sunday July 4th on Brighton/Hove beach from 11.00 onwards. If you would like to come to Brighton for the day, watch DC Storm struggle round the course (possibly sink), enjoy the seaside, and most importantly.....see them do their damndest to beat the Germans in a toe to toe penalty shoot out, they’d love to see you there. There’s going to be plenty of food stalls, lots for kids to do, music etc, it really will be a great day out! There's BBQ and beers afterwards for those that make it down (Hove Lawns from about 16.00). Be great to see you there!!

If you would like to support the RNLI please donate at: http://www.justgiving.com/dcstorm-sinking

If you would like to support Whoopsadaisy please donate at: http://www.justgiving.com/dcstorm-sinking2

If you would like to support Surfaid, please bring some cash or a cheque on the day to help raise a target of £2000 for the weekend.

SUSSEX BUSINESS AWARDS

Sussex Business Awards ~ How about Your Company?

Nicholas Owen is one of Britain’s best-known newsreaders and will host the award ceremony at The Grand in Brighton on the 2nd of December. He welcomed sponsors, previous winners and finalists to Fontwell to celebrate the opening of the 2010 awards.
Sussex companies have until 27 August to prepare their applications for a chance to triumph at the most prestigious business awards in the county.
There are fourteen trophies up for grabs this year, including the prestigious Sussex Company of the Year and International
Business Award, sponsored by some of the leading companies in Sussex. New sponsors this year include: BUPA International,
Morgan Sindall, Lloyds TSB, Venture Finance, Wired Sussex.
They join existing sponsors Redseven, Deloitte, NHS West Sussex, Veolia Environmental Services, The Argus, Sussex Life,
The Grand, Heart FM and Domestic and General.
One of the evening highlights was the appearance of broadcaster, Simon Fanshawe, who interviewed previous winner of the 2008 Small Business of the year, Focus4U, and entrepreneur of the year 2009, Paul Craig Showtec Lighting & Sound about
what winning an award has meant to them and the success of their businesses over the last two years. He also spoke to
the new chairman Martin Webb about what he was looking for in a winner.
Businesses young and old, large and small are invited to submit their nominations in up to three categories. There is  a small entry charge of £50 for one award and £100 for three. The costs cover the administration of the scheme.

Coalition Agreement – what it means for your business

The Coalition Agreement contains a number of major policy proposals which will have a significant effect on businesses. The Agreement includes some positive and negative moves for business, which are briefly summarized below:

Positives

  • it begins to set out a pathway for lowering the budget deficit, the number one priority of 58% of businesses according to the BCC’s post-election snap poll.
  • a partial roll-back of the planned employer NICs rise
  • the establishment of an independent commission to review the affordability of public-sector pensions
  • with the appointment of the new Business Secretary Vince Cable, we can expect to see the continued scrutiny of business lending by nationalised banks and a wider loan guarantee scheme.

Negatives

  • changes to capital gains taxes for non-business assets
  • the outright rejection of a second runway at Gatwick Airport is a major blow to Sussex’s attractiveness to inward investors.
  • proposals for an annual cap on inward migration from non-EU countries may make it more difficult for businesses to recruit skilled workers
  • the coalition partners’ inability to agree on nuclear power issues could delay the delivery of new energy capacity – crucial to inward investment and existing businesses.

Change is afoot for business with this new Coalition Government!
So take a good look at these pointers, to make the most of what they mean and how they will affect what you are doing in your business plans.
