BMC Exhibitions

Never So Bold

14 - 15 August ,  11am – 6pm
14th August 7pm – 10.00pm

Brighton Media Centre Gallery

15 – 17 Middle Street

An exhibition of work by young artists from the south. On show will be a mixture of photography, painting, textiles, screen prints and illustrations, and exhibitors include recent arts graduates, current students and others with no formal training but with plenty of talent.

Many works will be on sale with all proceeds going directly to the artists themselves.

There is no 'private view', just an evening event open to all, on Saturday 14th August from 7pm, where you can listen to local musical talent, pick up a vintage bargain, sip on a drink from our licensed bar and watch a magical puppet show. You'll also have a chance to meet many of the contributing artists and be able to purchase some amazing pieces at affordable prices.

A Working Coalition

‘A Working Coalition’
Lee Cheneler, Gavin Frankcom, Jennifer Sinclair

August 19th - August 22nd
Private View: 5pm - 8pm Wednesday August 18th

Brighton Media Centre Gallery
15 - 17 Middle Street

As with the current political landscape in which we find unusual and unexpected partnerships ‘A Working Coalition’ has brought together three artists with which you may find more differences than similarities. However what ties them together is a view and outlook with their creative practice that is open to influence and discussion from all areas of contemporary art and to ignore the boundaries that form between disciplines.

The exhibition will include painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and video installations.

Notices

SHARON SEYMOUR

Contemporary fine artist, Sharon Rosa Seymour, is now exhibiting her paintings in the reception of Friese-Greene House.

Seymour produces art that is a sensual celebration of colour and texture inspired by the natural world. The large scale paintings imbue movement and a feeling of shifting light. Within the seemingly abstract and ambivalent forms it is sometimes possible to see other unexpected and sensual elements.

Sharon Seymour’s work has been exhibited in London, USA, France, India, and across the South of England.  Shortlisted for the John Moore’s and commissioned for the Grand Design new build Health Centre in Kent for large scale paintings.

How To Handle Dirty Tricks In Negotiations

By Ian Newall, Business Manager, Open Courses, Huthwaite International

Rolling concessions

You've invested a lot of time and energy to get to agreement. You have a lot riding on the deal and you think you've covered everything with the other side. At last, you think you have a deal. Then the other side says: "Just one more thing. The boss would be much happier if you could extend terms by another 15 days..."
You're feeling elated that you've finally got the deal so you agree. Only to hear them ask: "Do you know, it'll make life a lot easier if you can just provide us with the higher spec ferumbulator..."
You're a bit taken aback that they've asked you for something more but, after all, the deal is in the bag, isn't it? So you agree. Only to hear: "And another thing..."

This is your wakeup call. You realise you are being screwed, that you have made significant concessions without thinking about the consequences. Questions will be asked back at the office. What the other side has done is to exploit the emotional investment that you have made in getting to this point, knowing that the sense of relief, even euphoria, that you are experiencing in having an agreement within your grasp. The question is, how to avoid getting into this situation in the first place and, if you do find yourself in this position, what to do about it?

The first step is to recognise the dirty trick.

Once you realise what they are doing it will be much easier to deal with it. A magician using a sleight of hand may draw gasps from the audience but as soon as the sleight of hand is recognised the trick becomes funny rather than a source of wonderment, something that was used to great effect by the late Tommy Cooper. Experienced negotiators frequently report how they almost burst out laughing when someone tried a dirty trick on them.

The second step lies in the planning. Know how far you are prepared to go and make sure you stick to your plan. If you have taken the trouble to work out your worst case on every negotiable issue and checked this with whoever gives you your mandate, that position will be firmly embedded in your consciousness and you are unlikely to go past .that position.

Thirdly, remember the golden rule of negotiation: don't give anything unless you get something in return. If they ask for something extra, don't agree until they have made a concession or given you something in return.
