Starbucks boss: "We were wrong to open Brighton shop"
By Richard Gurner
Email: richard.gurner@theargus.co.uk

The global boss of coffee chain Starbucks has said the firm got it wrong when they opened a branch in Brighton without planning permission.

There was community outcry in 2008 when the multi-national giant opened in Kemp Town's St James’s Street, despite being refused permission by Brighton and Hove City Council.

Company CEO and chairman Howard Schultz made the admission on yesterday's (WED) Jeremy Vine show when he was quizzed by the Radio 2 host.

Mr Schultz, who is in the UK promoting a book, said: "I think in that particular case there were certainly things that in hindsight we would do differently today.

"I would say universally in the future if a community didn't want us to come in we would be respectful and thoughtful.

"That is an isolated situation we're trying to work through and I don't think we got that right."

Research reveals slow internet connection in Sussex

By Sam Lister
Parliamentary Correspondent; Argus News.

Computer users in parts of Sussex are hit by some of the slowest internet connections in the UK.

Research revealed the South Downs is ranked as the 17th worst area for connection with 50% of residents hit by a sluggish service.

In the top 50 most badly affected constituencies Horsham came in at 46th, with 43% of the population affected.

It comes as MPs at Westminster pressed for an expansion of superfast broadband to bridge the digital divide.

Backbenchers came together in a cross-party effort to urge the telecoms regulator Ofcom to expand superfast mobile broadband to 98% of the UK, rather than the current 95% requirement.
