Brighton Festival

The curtain parts an inch and from the gap emits a curl of smoke. Then like a shark's fin surfacing, a pipe enters the stage. The pipe is attached to a face. The face is attached to a man. The man is attached to a banjo and you hip hop till you don't stop and the bones in your body shake and break with comedy gold!

This is Mr B, the gentleman Rhymer, starring in this year's Brighton Festival - the sensational, multicoloured, fully licensed, non refundable, fantastical bombastical collection of excellence available for 24 days!

Famous and Divine Present…
Fugitive Songs…

When: May 7th and 8th, 8pm
Location: Brighton Media Centre Studio
Type: Performance
Cost: £8 / £5 concession

…it begins with desire, the kind of desire that churns your stomach when you hear a song that ‘calls’ to you. That feeling when your body indefinably but voraciously yearns in response to a piece of music. We followed ‘the call’, drinking gin and smoking viciously, and found another life waiting – vague and insubstantial, but insistent. We teased that life into being on the stage, by pretending that the theatre was a cinema. It landed us in trouble – but such delicious trouble....

Current Exhibitions in Middle Street

Pauline Crook is a textile screen printer, who also likes to paint, take photographs and make 3D art boxes.

"Some of my screen prints are mounted as art pieces,  but I also print cushions, aprons, bags and deckchair slings.    My aim is to create ‘Art on a cushion’ or ‘Art on a deckchair’ and for each item to be unique.

Living near Lewes, the Downs and the sea, there is much to inspire all around, and Brighton seafront seagulls ’looking for lunch’  have been a reoccurring theme in my textile work for some years.

When I  paint it is in oils on canvas.  I take photographs because if I have my camera with me I can’t stop myself!

The 3D boxes result from things seen, heard or read, words that inspire me to re-create them visually.  They are a personal search for truth."  PaulineNCrook@aol.com

Hester Berry is a young artist specialising in landscape and figure paintings, in any media type.

Hester is inspired by the beauty and power of the natural landscape. She says ‘My painting is therefore an attempt to connect the visual and culturally familiar experience of the landscape with its visceral, reflexive equivalent, so that the viewer can identify with the pleasures of the existing but endangered 'great outdoors', and also become more aware of issues which imperil our fragile and beautiful planet.’

She has had solo exhibitions in Devon and in London and has contributed to group exhibitions throughout England and Wales and internationally.

Hester Berry's paintings draw attention to local and global environmental issues.

When you start your own business, having to deal with the business finances can be a daunting task. Even if you employ an accountant to deal with the annual accounts and tax returns, you still need to deal with the day-to-day financial decisions.

Without having a handle on your business finances it becomes difficult to make important choices such as whether to invest in new equipment, sign a lease or take on staff.

In this workshop, Carol Lewis of Bainbridge Lewis Limited will show you how monitoring your own finances efficiently will help your accountant in producing your annual accounts, reducing their costs and ultimately saving you money.
