'If the Eiffel Tower shapes the Paris skyline, the Empire State building symbolises New York,
then the London Eye now clearly defines our capital in the 21st Century.'
Join us on Thursday March 5th at the Pavilion Theatre Brighton to hear Julia Barfield describe
the incredible challenges she and her partner David Marks overcame to create this piece of
history in our time.
Speaker:
The London Eye has captured the public's imagination. In the eight years since opening, over twenty million visitors have enjoyed unparalleled views over the capital, and it has also made a significant contribution to the regeneration of the area.
Julia Barfield and David Marks were not just the designers of the Eye; they were its originators, and they went through years of campaigning, consulting and cajoling before they even thought about how to build it. They were also its part owners, along with British Airways and the Tussauds Group before selling their one-third stake to Tussauds for an undisclosed sum.
During the last 13 years, Julia Barfield and David Marks, have designed projects in leisure, housing, transport, education and cultural sectors. Julia has been an Awards assessor for the RIBA and the Civic Trust, an enabler for CABE and lectures widely in schools and universities, education conferences and institutions in London and overseas.
